Agricultural Courses at Dwight
These are all of the courses that are available at DTHS that you can take. When you are enrolled in any of these AG classes you automatically are a member of FFA. Each contains a brief description along with any prerequisite classes.
INTRODUCTION TO THE AGRICULTURE-- This class is the first and a required class of all agriculture classes. The course will survey the many components of the agricultural industry including, the role of agriculture in society, the history of agriculture, FFA and the various areas of agriculture. Careers in the industry will be emphasized. Hands-on activities such as food production, ice cream labs, intro to archery, greenhouse activities, leadership conferences, and SAE projects.
LENGTH OF COURSE: One Semester
CREDIT: 0.5 Credit
There is no prerequisite for this class. Preference is given to freshman and sophomores. Any member enrolled in class is automatically a member of FFA as the two work together to provide an enriching agriculture education program.
AG SCIENCE- This course will cover the importance of animal, crop, plant, and food science in the agriculture industry. Topics will include, animal science, greenhouse, crop science, food science, ag processing, and ag careers. This class focuses on hands-on labs and group projects to incorporate real life applications including soil sampling, jerky making, self-designed experiments, and small animal care. Leadership skill development is an integral part of this program and is delivered through FFA activities. Any member enrolled in class is automatically a member of FFA as the two work together to provide an enriching agriculture education program.

LARGE AND SMALL ANIMAL CARE-This course will cover the care of companion and production animals. Units of study will include cats, dogs, exotic animals, beef, dairy, swine, sheep, goats, horses, poultry and specialty animals. We will focus on their importance to the industry, reproduction, anatomy, nutrition, and management for each unit. Any member enrolled in class is automatically a member or FFA, as the two work together to provide an enriching agriculture education program.

PREREQUISITES- Introduction to Agriculture or Ag Science, or consent of instructor.
VETERINARY SCIENCE- This course will develop students’ understanding of the small and companion animal industry, animal anatomy and physiology, animal nutrition, animal health veterinary medicine, veterinary office practices, and animal services to humans. Career exploration will focus on veterinarian, veterinary lab technicians, office lab assistant, small animal production, research lab assistant, and animal nutrition lab technician. Through hands-on labs and experiences, you will be able to see what it is like to be a vet tech! Since FFA and Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs are integral components of this course, students are encouraged to participate as a member of the FFA while in this course.

HORTICULTURE/GREENHOUSE- This course highlights many of the areas of horticulture and the areas of knowledge that are important to them: growing media, fertilizers, plant growth regulators, pest management, greenhouse structures, greenhouse production, nursery crops, floral design, interiorscaping, landscaping and vegetable production. The students will grow plants in the greenhouse; do plantings at school, make bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and floral arrangements. The identification of hundreds of plants is an essential aspect of the course.

PREREQUISITES: Biology II is highly recommended. Junior/Senior, Approval of Instructor.
NATURAL RESOURCES AND CONSERVATION 1-This course will cover the importance of the relationships between agriculture and natural resources. Topics include conservation, forestry, soils, land use, praries, outdoor recreation, and current issues in natural resources. Careers in the industry will be emphasized. Leadership skill development is an integral part of this program and is delivered through FFA activities. Any member enrolled in class is automatically a member of FFA as the two work together to provide an enriching agriculture education program.

This course will cover the importance of the relationships between agriculture and natural resources. Topics include wildlife, game animals, game birds, safety and ethics, archery, aquatics, fish and current issues in natural resources. Careers in the industry will be emphasized. Leadership skill development is an integral part of this program and is delivered through FFA activities. Any member enrolled in class is automatically a member of FFA, as the two work together to provide an enriching agriculture education program.

AGRICULTURE BUSINESS-This course will develop students’ understanding of the US and world agriculture industry and will cover knowledge and skills required in operating a business. Topics include communications, marketing, sales, personal finance, product development, trading, imports and exports, and advertising. Students will develop and operate a school cooperative. Careers in the industry will be emphasized. Leadership skill development is an integral part of this program and is delivered through FFA activities. Individualized instruction and learning reinforcement are provided through Supervised Agriculture Experience programs (S.A.E.’s)
